Just when you thought you’d figured out the difference between balayage, bronde, and ombre. There's a new trend stepping into the scene. “Ecaille”, tortoise shell hair - the rich new “it” shade is being rocked by some of Hollywood's most idolized starlets. Giselle, Jessica Alba and the new and improved Blake Lively.
If you’re thinking it's basically a brunette version of the ombre, you’re wrong. It's a much softer blend than a traditional ombre. Color is added to the roots to either richen up the natural color or add depth. Much more of a mixture of dimension rather than light ends.
While ombré was focused on gradually fading from dark to light, tortoise shell hair is all about the specific colors being highlighted—shades like caramel, honey, chocolate, and mahogany. The tones are much warmer and more golden than what we saw with ombré. If you want to hop on the ecaille trend, show your colorist photos of early adopters like Rosie Huntington-Whitley and Khloe Kardashian, who have the right mix of colors.
