Why do you want a sulfate-free shampoo?

What the heck is a sulfate?

Picture
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sulfate
Sulfates are an agent in hair products that cleans dirt, chemicals, and oil from your hair. That being said it strips the hair quite harshly of its natural oils as well as everything else. Sulfates are found in the forms of sodium laureth sulfate (SLES) and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). SLES is primarily a foaming agent hence it's popularity in shampoo and SDS is a surfactant which strongly removes oils.

Why sulfates are bad

Picture
http://www.allwomenstalk.com
Every hair strand has a protective layer made of natural oils the scalp and hair secrete. This layer protects the hair from being damaged, sucking up toxins in the air, and shield the hair cuticle from dust and debris. By stripping this layer your leaving your cuticle open and exposed to all of nature's harsh factors. Even though sulfate are very good at cleaning they clean too well and strip the hair of that natural layer of protection. Sulfate are as aggressive to your skin as well as your hair. Your skin also secretes a protective layer of oil on your skin, this is a natural layer that doesn't make your skin greasy, in fact a healthy skin will have a strong layer of oil protecting it. So sulfates strip that layer as well, letting in literally everything into to your pores, no one wants that.

Why Sulfate free shampoos ?

Picture

Since sulfates are so aggressive as a striping agent they are generally frowned upon in shampoos and body washes. But since sulfates are a great foaming agent that produces lots of lather, they are still used in lower end cleansing products. Any good shampoo or body wash will say sulfate free, all higher end shampoos will be sulfate free so if you're buying from your salon, don't worry. The “good stuff” is going to contain a  more organic ingredient base. Using natural cleaners to clear and clean the scalp and hair without causing a harsh effect on the hair, you will also get a richer intake of moisture and protein from organic ingredients.
In conclusion sulfates are just too harsh on the hair and skin and should be avoided if possible. You have far more gentle options to clean and take care of your hair that don't involve sulfates and do a heck of a job. So opting for the organic ingredients really will help you out. Both in the integrity, cleansing, and the health of your hair. Healthy hair, happy life

Hair Myths Uncovered

What really is a fun fact about your hair?

Time to put that hair knowledge to test, by revealing the truth about common hair myths and see if they really hold up.

Gray hair is caused by stress myth or fact?
Picture

Myth

Although stress can really beat up your hair, you are much more likely to experience hair loss or thinning then you are to prematurely gray. Gray or white hair is largely controlled by genetics, however the extra stress can encourage the gray hair to come sooner. This being said, only genetics can really yield the gray hairs. So if you have a family history of turning gray, having high levels of stress you most likely won't cause you to see those grays pop up. So in conclusion, stress does not produce gray hairs, but it does speed up the natural genetic hair growth of grays. So grays really are decided by your family, not your stress levels.
If you pluck a gray hair two more will take its place,
  myth or fact?
Picture
https://rachfeed.com/plucking-gray-hair-make-grow-back-cosmetic-scientist-answers/

MYTH

Plucking a hair solely because it is gray will not make two more grow in its place. A follicle that hosts one hair will not develop another hair shaft due to the hair being plucked from it. If the follicle can host more than one hair shaft, it might, but it won't be solely due to plucking a gray hair. So in conclusion plucking gray hairs will not make another hair form, but that original gray hair will still be gray when it comes back in, there's no getting rid of them.
The sun will lighten your hair, myth or fact?
Picture

Fact

The sun can lighten hair, but not all hair. It you have lighter hair and spend quite a bit of time outside you may notice some natural highlights, if you have darker hair you make notice the ever so slightly lighter brunette pieces. But the sun will not give you noticeably blonde highlights, it will only only softly lighten. This being said the much darker hair that is very textured will mostly not be affected by the sun due to the natural resistance built into dark hair. the sun can bleach your hair, akin to wood and paint fading. It erodes the pigment slowly over time. So the amount of time in the sun would have to be substantial. In the end, yes, the sun can lighten your hair, but it will not give you notice blonde pieces that you would expect from highlights. So if you want to be blonde don't expect to get anything from the sun, go see your hairdresser.

Shampoo makes your hair shed, myth or fact?
Picture
https://www.naturallycurly.com/curlreading/home/5-easy-shower-hacks-to-help-you-lose-less-hair/

Fact

Excess use of shampoos can cause your scalp to overproduce sebum because you hair and scalp are being striped of sebum making your hair and scalp very dry. So your scalp starts to overproduce sebum to counteract the dryness. The overproduction of sebum clogs the hair follicles, which makes your scalp quite unhappy. So in conclusion, your hair will shed more if you wash your hair excessively and too much force can cause your body to overproduce oils. making your follicles more frail. Regular shampooing only a few times a week will result in healthier hair. Hair can still fall out due to unrelated issues, such as environment, medication, and overly processed hair. If you notice a over abundance of hair loss in the shower notify your doctor for good notice. Large hair loss is not normal and may be a symptom.
Shampoos with bigger lather clean better, myth or fact?
Picture
http://www.tabithajameskraan.co.uk/foam-bubbles-lather-truth-sulfates/

MYTH

Not all shampoos need to have a big foaming up to get your hair clean, but people visually connect bigger the lather to a better clean. This is occasionally the opposite. Companies know that you want to see the lather and put ingredients to make it as foamy as possible, but clean your hair at a sub par level. So there is actually no connection between lather and how well the shampoo actually works. There are actually some higher end shampoos that don't even lather at all. Don't buy a shampoo solely on how it lathers up and makes massive foam, it probably isn't doing its job. Make sure you get a name brand shampoo. Even though the salon worthy shampoos may be more expensive, they are on a whole other level then the kind you pick up at Walmart. They are more expensive because they are much much better for you then the cheaper products.

Wearing hats cause baldness, myth or fact?
Picture

MYTH

Wearing a hat all the time won't cause you to go bald, but it's not without its side effects. Due to the lack of circulation to the scalp where the brim of the hat lies, this may cause the hair to thin due to a shortage of blood in the scalp. The hair will grow as normal when you stop wearing the hat nonstop; so the damage isn't permanent. Balding is caused by genetics, medication, or a medical condition and is not brought on by wearing a hat or any head wear. So as long as you let your scalp breathe, you shouldn't worry about losing any hair that is related to head wear.
Not all those little fun facts you hear around are true, so don't get to worried if you hear some crazy myth. If you really have a "myth" you want to verify ask your hair dresser, because hair dressers are trained in the everything about hair down to the chemistry and really from working will all kinds of people and hair. If you have any "myths" you want to debunk please shot me any questions I can answer for you. So in don't believe everything you hear, when it comes to your hair.

Lets talk CURLS

Hair has a wide range of textures but curly hair has a quite large range from beach waves to solid coils. Curly hair is the hardest to manage, it has the most texture so it can create extraordinary volume. That being said it loves to suck up water, so it has a field day with humidity.

Curly hair can be a blessing and a curse. On a good day, you'll have luscious tousled curls but on a bad day, it is frizzy craziness.

Curly hair is very demanding texture, it lacks moisture and is hard to manage. To make those crazy locks more manageable, it starts with products. Curly hair needs one thing most of all, with all its little heart it needs moisture!
Here is a few products to help manage the frizz, and hydrate that hair!

Picture

For styling, a great tool to manage and maintain a naturally curly look is a diffuser. A diffuser tool is an attachment that you can snap on to the end of your hair dryer, this spreads out the airflow to enhance the curl as it drys. To use a diffuser, the hair must first be damp. Then grab a handful of hair and scrunch it to the base of your scalp and replace your hand with the diffuser. Massage the diffuser in the section until dry, repeat all over head until head it's fully dry, then add finishing products.

Good Shampoos and conditioners to use are Replumping. This is a nourishing product for delicate hair, prone to breakage and an hydrating agent, and helps the natural elasticity. Nourishing is a nourishment product to help with severely dry and damaged hair that really hydrates the hair. Melu is another nourishing product that is best with brittle and dry hair. Finally, Love Curl, which is a product that hydrates, adds volume, shine, and improves the manageability of the hair.

A few styling products to use that condition the hair and help against heat

The color craze has been blowing up, but not everyone one wants to commit to a fun funky color on their entire head. But thanks to the new trend going around you can get your color fix without all the commitment. By having your fun color hidden in some way, they are usually located on the nap of the neck or at the roots making them hidden until you wear your hair up revealing the colors.

The hair is dyed these fun and colorful colors while the rest of the hair is still a natural tone, covering up the the colorful tones making them hidden. Since the natural is still there, you can still pull off a natural look. Or this look could be paired with a spunky color as well, if you just can't choose what color your want, now you don't have to choose, just add all of them!
